Pigmentation IPL laser treatment

Many of us of a certain age will remember playing out in the summer sun with very little or no SPF protection as back then little was known about the lasting and damaging effects of the sun. Sun lotion was little known about let alone used and therefore most of us that were born pre 80s have some level of sun damage (an over production of pigment cellist the skin) which can be prematurely ageing.

Rosacea Treatment

Rosacea is a common, chronic skin condition that women are particularly susceptible to. Although, it can affect anyone it is particularly common in middle aged women

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that usually appears on the face but can affect the décolletage area too.

It may manifest itself as persistent redness, blood vessels and spots.

The specific cause of Rosacea is unknown, but it is thought that exposure to sunlight, extreme hot and cold temperatures as well as the consumption of alcohol, caffeine and spicy foods can exacerbate the condition.

Symptoms of Rosacea

*Persistent flushing of the face

*Thread veins

*Red spots

*Thickening of the skin

The four main symptoms are persistent flushing of the face especially around the nose and cheeks. Often this is accompanied by red veins more commonly known as broken capillaries.

Thickening of the skin can also appear as excess uneven tissue particularly around the nose and cheeks.

Red spots may be present which can be filled with puss.

Does Rosacea get worse in the summer?

Sun, hot weather and humidity can all lead to a flare up of the condition-sun exposure is one of themes common triggers therefore using a sunscreen with at least spa 30 or higher is the best way to protect your skin.

What is the best treatment?

Although Rosacea cannot be cured it can be dramatically improved and managed by laser facials using IPL light therapy.

The area is cleansed and then gel applied to cool the area.

Using the correct setting bespoke settings for the individual and correct handpick the laser is then pulsed on the skin. Within 2-3 days an improvement in the skin should be noticed -the skin will be less red and the texture improved ,-.

We all have our personal preference to the look of our bikini line. Some like a full hair bikini whilst others opt for full hair removal - whichever your preference whatever your thoughts its your choice that matters to us at Aspen.

Remember once you’ve had IPL/Laser permanent hair removal you can’t change your mind - it’s permanent.

Bikini - for a tidy up from where the top of your leg creases and approximately an inch out from your briefs - this does not include underneath (*perianal hair growth)

Brazilian  - as much or as little as you like removed and includes perianal - a strip a triangle or all gone - then Brazilian is for you.

The benefits of the Brazilian are that whatever bikini briefs you wear, you don’t need to worry about being exposed - you’ll also achieve improved hygiene and be left with smooth less irritated skin.

Growing your nails naturally

Whether you’re a life long nail biter or its just that you don’t seem to be able to get any length on your nails that seem always too weak to grow, there’s a simple cost effective natural solution - petroleum jelly/vaseline.

This massaged into the nail and cuticle every night for three weeks and you will start to reap the benefits.

Follow these simple steps for longer/stronger nails.

Step one

Remove any nail varnish from the nail

Step two

Soak the clean nails in warm water with a small amount of detergent for five minutes.

Step three

With a cuticle stick, gently push back the cuticles (be careful not to push too hard), which can damage the nail bed and cause white spots or bruising.

( nb if the cuticles do not quickly push back re-soak until they do )

Step four

Massage a small amount of petroleum jelly into your whole nail and cuticle

Ideally this would be done in the evening when you are relaxing (if you could repeat stage four in the morning before breakfast that would be great!!!)

After three weeks, your nails should be vastly improved in length and strength. I recommend Sally Hanson's” complex as nail” treatment to maintain your nails.

Now that you have your nails in great condition, book an appointment with Lucy at Aspen to apply BIAB (Build In A Bottle) gel, which will maintain the strength of your nails for up to three weeks!

BIAB is essentially gel polish, but far more effective than ordinary gels, leaving the nails super strong.

The nails are cleaned of any residual polish and wiped over with acetone to remove any residual natural moisture, enabling the BIAB to adhere firmly to the nail.

The nail bed is gently filed and the first coat is applied.

The nails are then placed under a UV lamp and allowed to cure ( this is a process called polymerisation.

This application and curing are repeated several times, and finally, the nails are wiped over with acetone to remove any unwanted residue.

Lucy is an expert in this application and can make even the shortest nails look well groomed for less than £20.

Ingrown hairs - a painful problem!!

Painful ingrown hairs a common problem when waxing , shaving or plucking -Laser and IPL hair removal can irradiate this forever as the hair is targeted at the root permanently

An ingrown hair typically appears as a raised ,red and often painful bump caused by the hair being trapped underneath the skins surface. If the hair is not removed ,the follicle can often come infected resulting in a sore, puss filed boil like lump.

This slide shows hoe the hair is trapped under the skin -still growing underneath the skin eventually causing a painful often infected raised spot as the hair cannot get out of the follicle which has become sealed .

So how do we treat them?

Laser hair removal permanently reduces hair growth by up to 90%, which also reduces ingrown hairs by 90%. With laser or IPL hair removal, the hair is safely cauterised and will eventually stop growing after a course of treatments—therefore, there will be no more ingrown hairs.

At home maintenance

In the areas where you are prone to ingrown hair, always use a gentle scrub cleanser and an exfoliating mitt. These should only be used after the skin has soaked for at least ten minutes, i.e., during a bath. This will help to release the ingrown hairs. Once dried, use a small amount of antiseptic cream in the area.

DO NOT squeeze the red lumps as this will not only be painful but can cause permanent scarring.

Embracing the grey

From very dark brown natural silver tones accentuated with L’oreal PO1 toner -a journey of highlights to lift the box dyed colour out gradually over several visits as to not damage the core of the hair .

Presently there are fabulous tones and shades of grey/pewter/silver  and permanent colours enabling just about anyone to try this high fashion look.

Warm silver and gold tones

Following corona virus lockdown many clients (who thankfully for me and my fellow salon professionals) resisted reaching for the box dye! decided to embrace their increasingly present regrowth grey.

For those who did not want to get the remaining tinted hair removed - salon professionals were left with the task of matching up the regrowth and previously tinted hair, lessening the effect of the “line” that had materialised.

Lifting out the brown tones to reveal this stunning pearlescence -a good edgy cut and your ready to go !

Here are some suggested solutions to regrowth

Why not experiment once you’ve grown your coloured roots out and embraced your natural grey tones? - with the addition of semi permanent tones -no damage to the hair and lasting several washes -a great way to mix up your look and with an edgy ,modern state of the art cut and style -grey is as fashionable was it comes !!!

Solution One

There are highlights to blend in the grey, the amount of which will depend on how much grey is present and your natural base colour.

Solution Two

Low lights, if you're not ready to completely embrace the grey, you can choose a softer option than full head tint by choosing low lights, adding more of your base (natural) colour to your regrowth.

Solution Three

There is a permanent toner on your overall hair (dependant on the colour of your tint), which will have faded by now due to lockdown.

Well, none of us could have predicted months ago that we would all be told to stay at home whilst the whole world locked down along side us !

In these unprecedented times we watched open mouthed and incredulous as the effects of a Global pandemic unwound before our very eyes .

However as an eternal optimist my glass is always half full ( or that’s the way I try to keep it!?) as well as the obvious negative effects there were a lot of positives to come out of an enforced personal ,national and world wide lockdown -it gave us ( or the majority of us (Massive respect to all the NHS and key workers who managed in these difficult times to keep us safe and the country moving ) time -just that “time “ to stop and metaphorically 'smell the coffee’ !

We baked (flour was like gold dust !),sorted cleaned ,gardened ourselves into a frenzy and had time to enjoy the fresh air and most of the time the glorious weather!

Never before had we had the time and “no other choice” than to grow our locks and for some “embrace the grey “.

Returning to the salon with a different mind set and varying styling goals - a dream for me as I could begin to cajole and suggest different styles to clients old and new who had unwillingly gone through the painful stage of growing their style out -it was a renewed blank canvas and we all began to appreciate i think without exception how important it is to maintain and love the hair you have -after all your hair is the crown you never take off !

Fed up of damaged box dyed hair?

The problems with box dyes  - though like everything else they have evolved with time is that mostly to be honest - like putting petrol into our cars - we leave it to the last minute and instead of applying only to regrowth we plaster it on all over promising ourselves “next time” we’ll do it correctly

However putting tint on top of tint continuously results in a saturation of colour on the mid lengths and ends and in a few applications the latter will appear much darker and duller than the regrowth  -sound familiar??

As professionals we mix bespoke amounts of colour often mixing 2-3 colours/tones to create the colour that is correct for your skin tone and effect to be achieved. this is mixed with he correct conditioning peroxide and accurately applied to the area/sections that it should be with no overlapping (to apply like a professional is impossible on your own)

The tint will be left to develop accurately, and steps will be taken to ensure an even tonality of the colour.

That’s why salon-coloured hair shines and flows, unlike box-coloured hair, which can become dull and lifeless simply because the hair is damaged.

Ancient Egyptians dyed their hair after shaving it from their heads and transforming it into elaborate curled and braided wigs. Ancestors used saffron, indigo, alfalfa, and henna as temporary hair colours.

Modern hair colourants grew in popularity in the mid 1800s when William Henry Perkins stumbled across the formula whilst trying to create a medicine for malaria -not to change the colour of his hair.

Mauve was the first permanent hair colour discovered and forms the basis for all the beautiful colour palettes that are available to us today .

Main hair colouring techniques

All over colour

There are three levels of permanence when it comes to single process colouring

Permanent colour

This formula contains ammonia and peroxide  which chemically change the colour of hair.

Demi permanent

Contains no ammonia but does contain peroxide to help hair absorb colour -this generally washes out in 12-18 shampoos.

Toners

These are colours that sit on top of the outer layer of the hair and will not lighten the hair colour but will add tone, depth and shine -however they will only last 1-2 shampoos but are considered a good introduction to colour.

Highlights

Lighter slices or weaves of varying thickness that will enhance natural colour adding texture and brightening the overall appearance ..

Highlights can be placed all over your head or simply in places that will strategically enhance your style .-in other words wherever your stylist considers there should be extra dimension.

There are two types of highlighting -using foils and free hand painting also known as balayage .

Balayage

A hand painted technique allowing the colourist to place colour in specific areas of the hair-this is often incorporated with root stretch looks so that the mid lengths to ends of the hair have a greater concentration of colour without the requirement of high maintenance .

Foils

These can be woven slices as thick or thin as the effect achieved requires or woven parts of a slice.

Foils are placed at the root and the colour applied to the woven hair.

Hair loss - Is your hair shedding more than normal?

There are many reasons why this may be happening.one of which can be the change in seasons.

 Our hair sheds every day as pat of the hair growth cycle. depending on hair type and thickness it is completely normal to lose 50 - 100 hairs per day.

What can impact on your hair?

• Healthy lifestyle

• Getting enough sleep

• Eating correctly

Factors both inside and outside of the body can affect the amount and severity of hairs shedding.

Stress

This can affect hair loss dramatically (unfortunately adding to your stress) when we’re under stress the levels of cortisol (stress hormone) is increased

Growth cycle

The shedding can occur 2-6 months after giving birth however in an extremely high percentage of cases - try to find ways to deal with the stress and get a good nights sleep

Nutrition

hair has a vigorous metabolism and high cell turnover  - the key is to eat a balanced diet with protein and fatty aside, vitamins and minerals

 Illness

Illness can also affect the hair growth cycle, as can specific medication, this can last 4-6 months, but once recovered, the increase in shedding will cease.

Pregnancy

Postpartum hair loss is a type of hair loss which occurs after giving birth, and is a result of a severe shift in the hair once the hormones have settled, the hair will grow back

Brushing and styling

always use a wide tooth comb to detangle freshly shampooed and conditioned hair. Using a brush can strain the hair shaft and follicles too much, causing breakage and extreme shedding.
