The importance of a healthy diet for optimal skin

Healthy diet for skin.

Caring for your skin is not just about using the right products or following a skincare routine. Your diet plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy, glowing skin. Eating a balanced and nutritious diet can help you achieve optimal skin. In this blog post, we will discuss the foods that can help you maintain healthy skin.

  1. Fatty fish

Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and herring are rich in omega-3 fatty acids for healthy skin. Omega-3s help to keep your skin hydrated and reduce inflammation, which can lead to acne and other skin conditions. They also protect your skin from damage caused by the sun's harmful UV rays.

  1. Berries

Berries like blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries are packed with antioxidants, which protect your skin from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals can damage your skin cells and cause premature aging. Berries also contain vitamin C, which is essential for collagen production. Collagen is a protein that gives your skin its elasticity and keeps it looking youthful.

  1. Nuts and seeds

Nuts and seeds like almonds, walnuts, and sunflower seeds are rich in vitamin E, an antioxidant that protects your skin from damage caused by free radicals. They also contain essential fatty acids, which help to keep your skin moisturised and prevent dryness.

  1. Leafy greens

Leafy greens like spinach and kale are rich in vitamins A and C, essential for healthy skin. Vitamin A helps to repair and maintain skin tissue, while vitamin C is necessary for collagen production. Leafy greens also contain antioxidants that protect your skin from damage caused by free radicals.

  1. Avocado

Avocado is rich in healthy fats, which help to keep skin moisturised and prevent dryness. It also contains vitamins E and C, which protect skin from damage caused by free radicals. Avocado is also a good source of biotin, essential for healthy skin, hair, and nails.

  1. Sweet potatoes

Sweet potatoes are rich in beta-carotene, which is converted to vitamin A in your body. Vitamin A helps repair and maintain skin tissue and protects skin from damage caused by the sun's harmful UV rays.

  1. Water

Last but not least, drinking enough water is essential for healthy skin. Water helps to keep your skin hydrated and prevent dryness. It also helps flush toxins out of your body, leading to clearer skin.

In conclusion, maintaining a healthy diet with the above foods can help you achieve optimal skin. Remember also to follow a regular skincare routine that includes cleansing, moisturising, and sun protection to maintain healthy skin.

Do IPL facials work on wrinkles?

Does IPL work for wrinkles?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments are generally more effective at addressing issues related to pigmentation, redness, and vascular concerns, rather than deep wrinkles or fine lines. At the same time, IPL can improve overall skin texture and reduce some signs of aging. Here's how IPL can impact wrinkles:

  • Superficial Wrinkles: IPL may help with fine lines and superficial wrinkles, particularly those caused by sun damage. The light energy stimulates collagen production, leading to firmer, smoother skin.

  • Collagen Stimulation: IPL can stimulate collagen production, gradually improving skin texture and elasticity. Over time, this may reduce the appearance of fine lines.

  • Combination Treatments: Some practitioners combine IPL with other procedures, such as pigmentation damage, red veins, rosacea, and acne, to address both problem areas and wrinkles simultaneously. This combination approach can offer more comprehensive results.

  • Multiple Sessions: Notable wrinkle improvements often require multiple IPL sessions, and the results may become more apparent with continued treatments.

If your primary concern is wrinkle reduction, you may want to explore other treatments specifically designed for that purpose, such as:

  • Fractional Laser Resurfacing: This treatment targets wrinkles and fine lines by creating controlled micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating collagen production and skin renewal.

  • Botox or Dermal Fillers: These injectable treatments can effectively reduce the appearance of wrinkles by relaxing facial muscles or adding volume to the skin.

  • Chemical Peels: Certain chemical peels, such as those containing glycolic acid or TCA (trichloroacetic acid), can improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of fine lines.

It's essential to have a consultation at Aspen to discuss your specific skin concerns and goals. We can recommend the most suitable treatments or combinations for addressing wrinkles and achieving your desired results.

How to prepare for IPL/Laser at Aspen

How do I prepare for an IPL treatment?

Preparing for an IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment is essential to ensure the procedure is safe and effective. Here are some steps to follow when preparing for an IPL treatment:

  • Consultation: Schedule a consultation with a qualified practitioner specializing in IPL treatments. Discuss your specific skin concerns, medical history, and treatment goals during the consultation. The practitioner will assess your suitability for IPL and provide a personalized treatment plan.

  • Avoid Sun Exposure: Before the treatment, minimize sun exposure and use sunblock with a high SPF on the treatment area. Sunburned or tanned skin can increase the risk of side effects, so it's essential to have a natural skin tone.

  • Discontinue Tanning Products: Stop using self-tanning products or tanning sprays at least two weeks before the procedure.

  • Avoid Certain Medications and Products: Some medications, skincare products, and supplements can increase the risk of side effects. Follow your practitioner's guidance on discontinuing specific drugs or products before treatment.

  • Shave the Area: If you're receiving IPL hair removal, shave the area the day before or on the day of your treatment. This ensures that the IPL energy is directed at the hair follicles beneath the skin rather than the visible hair above the skin.

  • Avoid Skin Care Products: On the day of the treatment, avoid using skincare products, makeup, and creams on the treatment area. Your skin should be clean and free from any substances that may interfere with the treatment.

  • Remove Jewelry and Makeup: Remove any jewelry or makeup from the treatment area before the procedure.

  • Dress Comfortably: Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment, as you may experience mild redness or swelling after the treatment.

  • Arrive with Clean Skin: Arrive at the clinic with clean skin in the treatment area, free from any lotions, creams, or oils.

  • Plan for Recovery: Depending on the intensity of the treatment and the area treated, you may experience redness and mild discomfort immediately after the procedure. Plan to have some downtime or consider scheduling your treatment when you can take it easy for the rest of the day.

It's important to closely follow specific pre-treatment instructions, as we provide guidance tailored to your individual needs and the type of IPL treatment you receive. Properly preparing for your IPL treatment can help ensure the best possible results and minimize the risk of side effects.

Acne -not only teenagers ! It can happen to 40 plus too heres a guide on how to treat Acne in more mature skin.

Acne in Over-40s

Aspen Hair, Beauty, and Laser Clinic

Acne is a skin condition typically associated with teenagers and young adults. However, it's not uncommon for people over forty to experience Acne as Acne. In fact, according to a study, about 12% of women and 3% of men over the age of 40 experience acne.

So why does Acne occur in people over forty? A few different factors can contribute to this.

Hormonal Changes: Hormonal changes are one of the primary culprits behind Acne in people over forty. Our hormone levels naturally fluctuate as we age, which can lead to Acne. Acne in particular may experience Acne during menopause or perimenopause, which can cause a decrease in estrogen levels and an increase in androgens.

Stress: Stress is another factor contributing to Acne in people over forty. As we age, we tend to have more responsibilities and stressors, which can cause our bodies to produce more cortisol. This can lead to increased inflammation and Acne.

Scare Products: Using the wrong skincare products can also contribute to Acne in people over forty. Our skin becomes more delicate and sensitive as we age, so using harsh or irritating products can lead to breakouts.

Diet: Finally, diet can also affect Acne in adults over forty. Eating a diet high in processed foods, sugar, and dairy can lead to inflammation and breakouts.

So what can you do if you're experiencing Acne in your forties? Here are a few tips:

Consult with a Dermatologist: If you're experiencing persistent Acne, it's a good idea to consult a dermatologist. They can help you determine the underlying cause of your Acne and recommend an acne treatment plan.

Be Gentle with Your Skin: As mentioned earlier, our skin becomes more delicate as we age. Use gentle, non-irritating skincare products, and avoid harsh scrubs or exfoliants.

Reduce Stress: Reducing stress can help reduce inflammation and Acne by incorporating acne relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing into your daily routine.

Eat a Healthy Diet: A balanced diet can also help reduce inflammation and Acne. Avoid eating plenty of acne fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, and limit your intake of processed foods, sugar, and dairy.

In conclusion, Acne is just a problem for teenagers and young adults. People over forty can also experience Acne due to hormonal changes, acne stress, skincare products, and diet. By consulting with a qualified laser and skin specialist at Aspen, being gentle with your skin, reducing stress, and eating a healthy diet, you can help minimise Acne and improve your skin's overall health and appearance.

Teenage Acne what are the symptoms and treatment at Aspen

*Teenage acne

Acne is a common skin condition that affects people of all ages, but it is particularly prevalent during the teenage years. Teenage acne can be a frustrating and embarrassing problem that can significantly impact a young person's self-esteem and social life. This blog will discuss the causes, symptoms, and treatments for teenage acne.

Causes of Teenage Acne

Acne occurs when the hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. Hormones are the primary cause of acne during the teenage years. During puberty, the body produces more androgen hormones, which stimulate the sebaceous glands in the skin to produce more oil. The excess oil clogs the pores, leading to the formation of pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads.

Other factors that can contribute to teenage acne include:

  1. Genetics: If a parent or sibling had acne during their teenage years, it increases the likelihood that the child will develop acne.

  2. Diet: Certain foods, such as sugary and greasy, can trigger acne in some people.

  3. Stress: Stress can increase the production of hormones that contribute to acne.

Symptoms of Teenage Acne

Teenage acne typically appears on the face, chest, back, and shoulders. The symptoms of adolescent acne can vary from mild to severe and may include:

  1. Whiteheads: Small, white bumps on the skin caused by clogged pores.

  2. Blackheads: Small, black bumps on the skin caused by clogged pores.

  3. Pimples: Red, raised bumps on the skin that are filled with pus.

  4. Cysts: Large, painful bumps under the skin filled with pus can cause scarring.

Treatments for Teenage Acne

Many treatments are available for teenage acne, and the best treatment will depend on the severity of the acne and the individual's skin type. Some of the most common treatments for adolescent acne include:

  1. Topical treatments are creams, gels, or lotions applied directly to the skin. They can help unclog pores and reduce inflammation.

  2. Oral medications: Oral medications are prescription medications taken by mouth. They can help reduce oil production and decrease inflammation.

  3. Lifestyle changes: Lifestyle changes, such as eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, and reducing stress, can help improve acne.

  4. Professional treatments: Professional treatments, such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and light therapy, can help to reduce acne and improve the appearance of the skin.

How is acne IPL treatment carried out at Aspen?

Acne IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment is a non-invasive procedure that uses broad-spectrum light to target the bacteria that causes acne. Here are the steps involved in the treatment:

  1. Preparation: The skin is cleaned, and a cooling gel is applied to the area to be treated.

  2. Application of IPL: The IPL device is placed over the skin and emits short bursts of broad-spectrum light. The light penetrates the skin and targets the bacteria that causes acne, reducing inflammation and redness.

  3. Cooling: After each light pulse, the skin is cooled using a chilled tip or cooling gel to minimise discomfort.

  4. Post-treatment care: After the treatment, a moisturiser and sunscreen are applied to the skin. Patients are advised to avoid direct sunlight and to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF.

It is important to note that the number of sessions required for acne IPL treatment depends on the severity of the acne and the individual's skin type.

Prevention of Teenage Acne

Preventing teenage Acne can be challenging, but some things can be done to reduce the risk of developing Acne. Some tips for preventing teenage Acne include:

  1. Keeping the skin clean: Washing the face twice daily with a gentle cleanser can help remove excess oil and prevent clogged pores.

  2. Avoid picking at pimples: Picking can cause scarring and worsen Acne.

  3. Using non-comedogenic products: Using products labeled "non-comedogenic" means they won't clog pores and cause Acne.

  4. Wearing loose-fitting clothing: Tight clothing can trap sweat and oil against the skin, leading to Acne.

Conclusion

Teenage Acne is a common problem that can be frustrating and embarrassing. However, most teenagers can improve their Acne and regain confidence with the proper treatment and prevention strategies. If you or someone you know is struggling with teenage Acne, text or call us at Aspen Hair, Beauty and Laser 07984514992 for guidance on the best treatment options.

How is Rosacea treatment carried out at Aspen Hair Beauty and Laser / IPL

*How is IPL rosacea treatment carried out at Aspen Hair, Beauty and Laser clinic.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) therapy is a common treatment for rosacea, a skin condition that causes redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels on the face. IPL therapy uses a device that emits a range of light wavelengths to target the redness and blood vessels associated with rosacea.

The IPL device emits a series of high-intensity pulses of light that penetrate the skin and are absorbed by the blood vessels, causing them to shrink and collapse. This reduces the redness and flushing associated with rosacea.

During the IPL treatment, the patient's eyes are protected with safety goggles, and a cooling gel is applied to the skin to help minimise discomfort. The IPL hand piece is then applied to the skin, delivering short pulses of light to the affected area. The treatment usually takes about 10-20 minutes, and multiple sessions may be required to achieve optimal results.

After the treatment, a small number of clients may experience mild swelling, redness, and discomfort, but these side effects usually subside within a few days. Clients are advised to avoid sun exposure and to use sunscreen regularly to protect their skin.

It's important to note that IPL therapy is not a cure for rosacea though IPL facials can dramatically maintain improve the appearance of the skin.

The benefits of IPL treatment for Rosacea

IPL treatment for Rosacea.

Facial redness, spider veins, and rosacea IPL treatment

Facial redness, spider veins, and rosacea are common skin conditions that can be treated with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy. IPL uses high-intensity pulses of light to target and reduce the appearance of these conditions.

IPL works by emitting a broad spectrum of light that targets the melanin in the skin, constricting the blood vessels and reducing redness. For spider veins, the heat from the light causes the veins to collapse and fade over time.

Before undergoing IPL treatment, it is important to consult with a dermatologist or qualified skin care professional to determine if it is the right treatment for you. They will evaluate your skin condition and medical history to ensure that IPL is a safe and effective option.

During IPL treatment, the skin is first cleaned and a cooling gel is applied to the treatment area. The IPL device is then applied to the skin, emitting pulses of light that target the affected areas. Patients may feel a mild stinging sensation during the treatment, but it is generally well-tolerated and does not require anesthesia.

After IPL treatment, patients may experience mild redness, swelling, and darkening of the treated areas, which typically subside within a few days. It is essential to avoid sun exposure and wear sunscreen to protect the skin during healing.

Multiple IPL treatments may be necessary to achieve optimal results, and maintenance treatments may be required to maintain the treatment's effects over time. Your skincare professional will develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs and goals.

Aftercare following Laser and IPL hair removal.

Exfoliating after laser hair removal is essential for several reasons:

  • Preventing Ingrown Hairs: Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells from the surface, which can otherwise trap newly growing hairs and lead to ingrown hairs. Exfoliating reduces the risk of ingrown hairs and the associated discomfort.

  • Maximizing Results: Exfoliating can help remove any remaining treated hair follicles more efficiently. This can enhance the effectiveness of the laser hair removal treatment, ensuring that fewer hairs regrow.

  • Smoothing the Skin: Exfoliation can make your skin feel smoother and more radiant. It can help remove dry or flaky skin, leaving a healthier complexion.

  • Reducing Skin Discoloration: Laser hair removal can sometimes cause temporary skin discoloration or darkening. Regular exfoliation can help even skin tone and reduce these discolorations over time.

  • Enhancing Product Absorption: If you use skincare products, exfoliating can improve their absorption into the skin. This allows any post-laser treatment creams or lotions to work more effectively.

  • Maintaining Long-Term Results: While laser hair removal offers long-term hair reduction, it's not always permanent. Exfoliating can help keep your results by preventing hair follicles from regenerating as quickly.

However, it's essential to be gentle when exfoliating after laser hair removal, especially in the treated areas. Avoid harsh or abrasive scrubs, as they can irritate the skin. Opt for gentle exfoliants, and follow your Aspen skin specialist post-treatment care instructions for the best results.

At home laser hair removal versus in clinic - which is better?

You may have seen an increase in the amount of at home laser hair removal devices entering the market especially given the global pandemic and lock down of so many beauty services, but do these machines really work?

How does laser hair removal work ?

Laser hair removal not only offers a long term solution to unwanted hair growth but the luxury of smooth silky skin all year round. The laser aims a concentrated light and heat into each hair follicles. The pigment in the hair absorbs the heat, therefore damaging the follicle enough to discourage further growth with the hair eventually falling out.

Professional laser hair removal treatments are tailored to eradicate hair from the hose face and body areas and the sessions are fast, effective, affordable and the reduction is permanent!!

Safety

Laser hair removal in Aspen Hair and Beauty is performed by highly qualified and experienced laser technicians who are laser safety certified. Before treatment, our clients are invited for a mandatory pretreatment patch test and consultation (free of charge) to check any individual contraindications and discuss pre/post treatment care. Unless you are a qualified and experienced laser technician, it is difficult to determine whether an at-home device is suitable for your skin type, running a high risk of hyperpigmentation and burns if you are resting an area which is not appropriate.

Many at-home devices have much lower wavelengths of energy.

Lower wavelengths of energy have been linked with hair stimulation, meaning they might actually grow more hair rather than less. However, they should be used with caution.

For the best results, treatments are performed regularly in the salon, requiring 6-12 sessions at four weekly intervals. At-home devices take much longer to complete, are much more time-consuming and inconvenient, and the results aren’t guaranteed.

So why choose Aspen

At Aspen Hair and Beauty, we are highly qualified and hold the highest industry training qualifications. We use technology that is NHS approved and globally recognised.

We believe everyone deserves to feel confident in their skin and strive to ensure every client experiences treatment in a safe and welcoming environment.

Laser hair removal is ideal for both men and women who want to permanently reduce excessive or unwanted hair from virtually all areas of the face and body.

So, if you are ready to ditch the razors and wax, call or text 07984514992 to book your free consultation and patch test.

Carbon Facial at Aspen

The carbon facial is a two stage process.

Highly effective for creating clear bright and firm complexion instantly and with zero downtime.

The carbon facial is especially effective for the treatment of

  • Enlarged pores

  • Acne

  • Pigmentation

  • Dull skin

  • Blocked pores

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

STAGE ONE

The skin is cleansed and then a thin layer of carbon is applied to the skin where it penetrates deep into the pores .

As the carbon dries it attaches itself to dirt oil and dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. Once dried the laser is applied

The carbon absorbs the light energy from the laser causing it to vaporise .

The heat from the laser activates the natural healing mechanisms in the  deeper skin layers.

STAGE TWO

Cellular turnover is stimulated and fibroblasts ( healing connective tissue) reignited to begin regenerating collagen and elastin.

Over a few weeks the regeneration will continue .

For longer term effects, a course of three treatments, spaced three weeks apart, are advised for optimal results followed by maintenance treatment every 6-8 weeks.

You will see an instant brightening of the skin which will feel and look smoother and softer following every treatment .
